Man shot dead by police after fatal stabbing in Paris suburb

French police have shot and killed a man who stabbed a number of passers-by, one fatally, in a suburb of Paris on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred just before 2pm at Hauts de Bruyeres park in Villejuif, roughly four miles south of Paris.

Mayor Franck Le Bohellec has confirmed that one victim, a resident of the town, has sadly died.

Translated to English, he tweeted: "Villejuif is in mourning.

"I once again extend my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims."

Paris' Prefecture Police have advised people to avoid the area, while officers and firefighters attend the incident.

On Twitter, the force wrote: "Hauts de Bruyeres Park. Law enforcement intervention in progress. Avoid the area."

The Mirror reports that bomb disposal experts were called to the scene amid fears the man may have been armed with explosives.
