Homicide squad detectives have extradited a man from Victoria who is accused of shooting dead another man and burying him on a property in the NSW Hunter region.

John Simpson was reported missing in April after he was last seen at Laguna, about 40km southwest of Cessnock.

Police say they found his body with a gunshot wound at a nearby property and began investigating under Strike Force Blakely.

Detectives searched the property again on Tuesday, seizing three firearms for forensic examination.

Detectives then applied for and were granted an arrest warrant for a 34-year-old man, who was arrested in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton later on Tuesday.

He was escorted by NSW detectives on a flight to Sydney on Wednesday, taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with murder and possessing an authorised firearm.

He was refused bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.

Police will allege in court the 34-year-old man fatally shot Mr Simpson before burying him on a property at Laguna.
