April 07--A Chicago Lawn man who was shot and wounded by police Saturday was charged with pointing a handgun at officers, authorities said.
Eric Pettway, 35, of the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street, is charged with one felony count of first-degree attempted murder, one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon and two felony counts of aggravated assault to a peace officer with a weapon, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department.
As of early Tuesday, Pettway was being held on a $900,000 bail in Cook County Jail, according to jail records.
Pettway was shot in the legs by gang enforcement officers near the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street about 4:15 p.m. Saturday, according to police.
Police were in the area near Rockwell and 61st streets and went toward the man "to conduct a narcotics investigation," police said in a statement.
When an officer approached the man and identified himself, the man turned and pointed a handgun at him, according to the statement. The man fled but ran into two other officers and pointed the gun at them.
Officers then fired at Pettway, hitting him in the legs.
The man was taken to an area hospital where his condition stabilized, according to the statement.
A gun was found at the scene, police said.
Pettway's relatives disputed police statements that Pettway had a gun.
Pettway's next scheduled court appearance is April 24.
