Man dies in hospital after being shot by Queensland police in south Brisbane siege

The stand-off inside a Stretton business lasted six hours before the man was shot by police.  (ABC News: Baz Ruddick)

A 48-year-old man has died in hospital after he was shot by Queensland police during a siege in Brisbane's south on Monday evening.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the shooting with the assistance of the Crime and Corruption Commission.

The siege had taken place at a business on Compton Road, Stretton and lasted almost six hours, beginning shortly after 1:00pm.

Police negotiators were called in at 3pm as surrounding businesses were evacuated and an exclusion zone was set up on Compton Road.

However five members of the public remained inside the premises but in a separate room to the man.

Emergency services vehicles were also on stand-by at a nearby petrol station.

Police will allege that at approximately 7:30pm the man raised a firearm at officers and was shot.

He was then transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition and was pronounced dead a short time later.

No-one else was injured as a result of the incident and the five people who were caught in the siege have given statements to police.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll told ABC Radio Brisbane the situation was delicate.

The Commissioner said police were able to separate those being held from the alleged gunman for a duration of the stand-off.

"Siege situations are extraordinarily difficult to deal with … Those people were kept safe and thankfully, they are obviously safe now, but it went for a number of hours," she said.

"Negotiators and specialists were involved but sadly, the gunman has passed away at the end of the day, but thankfully those people are safe."

Commissioner Carroll said an ethical standards investigation into the matter had commenced.
