'The officers were in fear of their life': Man dies after being shot by police on Russell Island

The incident is being examined by Ethical Standards Command.

A man, aged in his 30s, has died following a police shooting at Russell Island, east of Brisbane.

Police were called to a private address after reports of a disturbance at Ranora Avenue just after 9:00am today.

It is alleged the man was shot after he approached officers with an edged weapon as they were getting out of the car.

A crime scene was set up as investigations began.

Superintendent Andrew Pilotto said the altercation happened quickly.

"There was very little time from the arrival, so in terms of negotiation the investigation will look at that," he said.

"The officers were in fear of their life, I am informed, so that will be why they deployed lethal force.

"The police officers who attended the incident are obviously traumatised but we're providing support to them."

He said Ethical Standards Command would conduct an investigation on behalf of the coroner.

The Crime and Corruption Commission will oversee the investigation.

"A family out there somewhere is going to get some very bad news today about a loved one and our hearts go out to them."
