Sept. 15--A man shot by Chicago police on the West Side ran off down a gangway and darted through the window of a nearby home, where officers found him hiding under a bed, authorities said.
Two Area North gang enforcement officers saw the man running toward their car in the 1000 block of North Laramie Avenue in the Austin neighborhood around 9:40 p.m. Monday, according to police.
As the officers got out to talk to him, the man ran away, police said.
As officers chased the man into a gangway, he tripped and almost fell and a gun dropped from his waistband, police said.
The man picked up the gun and pointed it toward the officers. One officer opened fire and hit the man in the upper arm, according to Deputy Police Chief Dana Alexander at the scene.
The man ran south and sneaked through the open window of a house in the 900 block of North Laramie Avenue, Alexander said.
Several children and adults were in the home and told police they thought someone had entered the house, Alexander said.
Moments later, officers discovered the man hiding under a bed and took him into custody.
The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment, according to fire officials.
No other injuries were reported, and a gun was recovered inside the home, according to authorities.
