Police: Knife-wielding man shot by Crystal Lake officer

June 22--A Crystal Lake police officer shot and wounded a man who charged at him with a knife early Monday, authorities said.

About 11:10 p.m. Sunday, Crystal Lake officers responded to a domestic battery call at a home in the 300 block of West Terra Cotta Avenue. Officers were told a man in his late 20s had attacked a family member and threatened her with a knife, police said in a statement.

The man fled before officers arrived. The family member was treated at the scene for facial injuries.

About 1:35 a.m. Monday, officers were called to a home in the 800 block of Boxwood Drive after a report of an unwanted person in the single-family home.

Police said a "preliminary investigation" indicated the person was the man from the domestic battery call and that the man had entered the home without permission of the people there, which included the family member from the previous call.

The first officer on the scene entered the home "after hearing calls of distress within the home," according to the statement. The man, who police said had a knife, charged the officer and the officer fired his gun.

The man was struck "at least once," police said. He was taken to Centegra Hospital, but a condition report was not available.

The officer was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington as a precaution. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine is such cases, police said.

Illinois state police are investigating, according to Crystal Lake police.
