Man shot and killed at Marseille train station after attacking people with knife

A man has been shot and killed by police at a train station in Marseilles after attacking passers-by with a knife, leaving two people dead.

Security services are carrying out an operation at the city's main station in southern France and have asked people to stay away from the area.

The deaths of the passers-by were confirmed by police chief Olivier de Mazieres, who told AFP: "Two victims have died by knife."

The attack took place at the St Charles station in the early afternoon, with witnesses on Twitter speaking of a panic and a shooting as police intervened.

The National Police reported on Twitter that an operation was underway at around 2:30 pm.

French newspaper Le Figaro reported the mayor of Marseilles Jean-Claude Gaudin paid tribute to Sentinel soldiers "at a time when the number of victims could have been higher."
