Man shot after allegedly lunging at NSW police with knife

A man is undergoing surgery after being shot by police in northern New South Wales when he reportedly lunged at officers with a knife.

Police said they were sent to an address at Waterview Heights, about 15 kilometres west of Grafton, to check on a man's welfare around 4:00am.

Officers alleged that when they arrived a 36-year-old man lunged at them with a knife.

He was shot by police and treated at the scene before being flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

An investigation has been launched by the Critical Incident Team and the incident will be subjected to an independent review.

There were no other reported injuries.
