Man shares photo of craft beer bar selling Tennent's Lager

Tennent's Lager is being sold as a craft beer in Spain (Instagram) ( )

It may be Scotland's most popular drink, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone north of the border who'd describe the ubiquitous Tennent's as a craft beer.

Despite the reputation that precedes it, the Scottish staple has been found among other craft beers listed on a bar menu in Murcia Spain - and it is baffling people on Twitter.

Robbie Pye uploaded the photo proof to the social network, where he wrote: “They’re selling Tennent’s in Murcia as a craft beer in a hipster bar.”

The photo in question shows Tennent’s proudly displayed alongside a Belgian IPA,  Ricote Valley, and an American IPA Murcia LAB.

A craft beer is typically considered a beer made in a traditional or non-mechanized way by a small brewery - which is the opposite of the large commercial brewing operations at Wellpark, Glasgow’s longest-running beer production site, that creates the beloved Tennent’s.

Surprisingly, Spain isn’t the only country to hype up the lager - Pye’s post prompted other people to share their Tennent’s finds, with one man reminiscing on having to shell out €9 (£8) for the beer in Milan a few years back.

Another shared their account of finding the lager on a Chicago beer menu, where it was described as tasting “rather sweet with earthy tones” and selling for almost $6.

However, it could be that Tennent’s next-level marketing skills may have something to do with the international popularity of the Scottish beverage.

Although the beer is rated at just 3.19 out of five on beer-rating website Beer Advocate, the marketing team knows how to keep their customers amused.

In one notable Twitter exchange, a customer looking for a “low-calorie Tennent’s lager or a Tennent’s lite” was informed that they do, in fact, sell a version.

“We do, mate - it’s called a half-pint,” the brand wrote back.
