Hawker man threw knives at woman and raped her in his home, police allege

A Canberra man allegedly threw knives at a woman and raped her while refusing to let her leave his home.

Police allege that Warwick James Payne, 52, forcibly confined the woman in the Belconnen suburb of Hawker on Saturday evening.

Mr Payne is accused of hurling several knives at the woman to stop her escaping before assaulting her, attempting to choke her and raping her.

Officers arrested the 52-year-old man on Sunday afternoon and took him to hospital for a medical assessment.

Whilst there, under police guard, he allegedly assaulted a nurse who was trying to give him medication.

Mr Payne was subsequently charged with rape, sexual assault, forcible confinement, choking another person, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and assaulting a frontline community service worker.

He did not enter pleas or apply for bail when he appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday.

The case returns to court next month.
