Man sexually abused daughter for more than eight years

A man has admitted sexually abusing his daughter in Canberra for more than eight years.

The 37-year-old pleaded guilty on Tuesday afternoon to a charge of maintaining a sexual relationship with the girl between January 2013 and February 2021.

He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court over the phone from the Alexander Maconochie Centre, where he is behind bars on remand.

"I plead guilty, your honour," he told Magistrate Robert Cook.

The man cannot be named in order to protect the identity of his daughter.

MORE COURT AND CRIME NEWS:

His guilty plea on Tuesday followed negotiations between his lawyer, Rachel Bird, and prosecutor Katrina Marson.

Ms Marson withdrew six other charges, which included two of incest, saying the defendant had now pleaded guilty to a charge that "encompasses everything".

She said she and Ms Bird still needed to agree on the statement of facts that would outline the precise details of the offender's crime.

Mr Cook committed the man to the ACT Supreme Court for sentence, with the 37-year-old's case listed there for directions next week.
