Man 'sets himself on fire' in Wirral street

Ambulance and fire crews raced to the scene after a man was reported to have set himself on fire.

Emergency services were called out around 2.38pm to reports a man was on fire near the Gladstone Medical Centre in Rock Ferry.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in Old Chester Road, where crews were said to have given first aid to a man before handing him into the care of paramedics.

North West Ambulance Service confirmed they had treated a man in his 30s at the scene.

They said he had suffered partial burns to his upper body but was "conscious and alert".

After being treated, the man was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital.

It is not currently known how serious the man's injuries are.

People had posted on social media saying they had seen a large emergency response with the area around the scene blocked off.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "Firefighters were called to Old Chester Road, Rock Ferry, on Wednesday, April 21 following reports of a person on fire.

"Crews were alerted at 2.39pm and on scene at 2.45pm. One fire engine attended. Merseyside Police were also in attendance.

"Firefighters administered first aid to one person. They were then handed into the care of North West Ambulance Service and taken to hospital for further treatment."
