A man has been seriously injured in a “large-scale disturbance” during a boxing event at a community centre in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

A mass brawl reportedly broke out during the event which was held at the Pakistani Community Centre.

The event had been “packed with young people”, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said a man “believed to be in his early 20s” was assaulted during the commotion and taken to hospital for treatment “where he remains in a serious condition”.

Three people including a teenage boy have been arrested in connection with the disturbance, (GMP) said.

A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault, a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of police assault and violent disorder.

Chief Inspector John Haywood, of GMP’s Oldham division, said: “We are responding to a large-scale disturbance at the Pakistani community centre and, as such, there is a visible scene currently in place. Whilst inquiries are very much in their early stages, I would like to reassure those with concerns that we are working hard with both partners and the local community to piece together exactly what has happened.

“I would ask anyone with information to please get in touch with us at the earliest opportunity. We’re aware of videos circulating on social media, so are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have recorded footage as the incident unfolded.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 9087, quoting incident number 2296 of 14/06/19.

Alternatively, reports can be made anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
