Man seriously injured after being shot by armed police in quiet street

A man has been seriously injured after being shot by police following an incident in Cheshire.

Armed officers were called to a quiet residential street in Runcorn following reports of concern for the safety of a man at 1.20pm today.

Officers discharged a firearm leaving the man in need of urgent medical care.

Witnesses reporting hearing "two popping noises" after officers arrived, reports Liverpool Live.  

The man with 'serious injuries' was rushed to hospital following the incident, the force confirmed.  

The incident has now been referred to the Independent office for Police Conduct.

Chief Inspector Sarah Heath, from Runcorn Local Policing Unit, said: "At around 1.20pm on Wednesday 12 August police were called to an address on the Knoll.

“I would like to reassure the local community that this is an isolated incident and there is no risk to the public.

“Officers will remain in the area as we continue with our enquiries and I would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to an officer.

“In line with normal procedure, the incident has been referred to the Independent office for Police Conduct.”

"Officers are currently establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident and patrols have been increased in the area to provide reassurance.

"This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no risk to the community."
