The pedestrian was knocked down on the Hanover Road behind the old Penneys carpark in Carlow Town just before 5am on Tuesday.

He was rushed to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny with "serious injuries".

A garda spokeswoman told the Irish Daily Mirror: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision involving a van and a male pedestrian that occurred at approximately 4.50am on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at Hanover, Carlow Town.

"The male pedestrian (age unconfirmed at this time) was taken to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious injuries. Investigations are ongoing."
