Man seriously hurt after being trapped under train at Merseyrail station

A man suffered serious injuries after being trapped under a train at a Merseyrail station.

The incident occurred at 12.20pm at Aigburth Station, off Mersey Road, Aigburth, and saw a major emergency response deployed to the area, including an air ambulance helicopter.

The victim was trapped under the Merseyrail service, which had left the previous stop, Cressington Station, at 12.12pm, for around an hour and a half and sustained serious injuries.

Fire engines, search and rescue vehicles and ambulances lined the narrow approach to the station while the helicopter landed near Otterspool.

The ECHO spoke to an eyewitness who had been waiting at the station when the victim, who was also stood on the platform, ended up on the tracks just as the train approached.

The 40-year-old gardener, from Widnes, said: "It was horrible. There was another guy on the platform with me and we just looked at each other.

"He was white as a sheet and I was probably the same.

"It was the worst thing I have ever seen. I was shaking, I just hope he's ok."

Passengers on the train were kept onboard for around 20 minutes before being evacuated, and electricity was isolated from the track while the rescue operation continued.

A statement earlier from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews have been called to Aigburth Train Station where a person has been trapped under a train.

"Three fire engines and the Search and Rescue Team are in attendance.

"A person has been trapped under a train carriage with serious injuries. The train has been evacuated and the electricity to the track has been isolated.

"The casualty is being removed from the train to the care of paramedics. The air ambulance is also in attendance."

A spokesman from the British Transport Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance shortly before 2pm and the track was cleared not long after.
