Man Sentenced To 25 Years For Fatal Shooting

Defendant Kevin Monahan, left, listens to opening statements in his murder trial, Jan. 11, 2024, at the Washington County Courthouse in Fort Edward, N.Y. Monahan, who fatally shot a 20-year-old

A man in upstate New York has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old woman who mistakenly drove into his rural driveway. The incident occurred in the town of Hebron when the woman, identified as Kaylin Gillis, was riding in a caravan of vehicles looking for a party at another location.

The defendant, Kevin Monahan, was convicted of second-degree murder for firing a fatal shot that struck Gillis in the neck as she sat in the front passenger seat of an SUV. Monahan claimed the shooting was accidental and that he was trying to scare away what he believed were intruders near his property.

Prosecutors argued that Monahan's actions were driven by irrational rage towards trespassers. The jury deliberated for a short period before returning guilty verdicts for murder, reckless endangerment, and tampering with physical evidence.

The victim's father, Andrew Gillis, described his daughter as a young woman with aspirations of becoming a marine biologist or veterinarian. He expressed the profound loss felt by the family and the void left by her absence.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that such incidents do not go unpunished. The tragic death of Kaylin Gillis has drawn attention to the consequences of reckless behavior and the need for justice in such cases.

The victim's boyfriend, who was driving the SUV on the night of the shooting, expressed his deep sorrow and stated that he would never be able to forgive the defendant for his actions. The sentencing of Kevin Monahan serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence and the need for responsible firearm use.
