Man sentenced for shooting woman in head then lying to her about it for a month

A Georgia man who shot his girlfriend in the head has been jailed, two years after committing the crime that his victim didn't even realise had happened until a month afterwards.

Nicole Gordon told investigators that she had suffered for two months from severe headaches, memory loss, and trouble communicating in 2017, after what her then-boyfriend, Jerrontae Cain, said was a car accident while the two argued.

But, it turns out there was no car accident. Instead, when a friend took Ms Gordon to the hospital for an evaluation, doctors found a bullet lodged at the base of her skull, according to Fulton County police.

Cain had shot her, it turns out, causing her to black out. He then led her to believe she had been impacted by shards of glass, and had her stay at his mother’s home.

“Gordon said during the altercation, the driver’s side window of her vehicle broke and crashed down upon her face,” police in the county said. “Gordon said at that point she lost consciousness. Gordon briefly regained consciousness shortly after and realised she was in Cain’s vehicle.”

The police continued: “At no point during the month between the fight with Cain and her eventual visit to Atlanta Medical Centre did Gordon receive any professional care.”

Cain, 39, has now been sentenced to 25 years in prison, and another five years on probation for the crime. He was convicted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Ms Gordon still has the bullet in the back of her skull as doctors say it is too dangerous to remove it.
