Man seen carrying axe in corner shop

A man who was seen carrying an axe inside a corner shop was arrested by police.

Christopher Kelly, 34, was detained by officers after he was caught carrying the weapon inside McColls on King Street in Birkenhead on March 23.

The 34-year-old was arrested and the axe was later found hidden in a bush.

Kelly, of New Chester Rd, Rock Ferry, appeared at court on March 25, where he was sentenced to six months in prison.

A photo of the weapon has since been released by police who described the offence as "frightening and unnecessary."

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "Officers have welcomed the sentencing of a 34 year old man after he was caught earlier this week carrying an axe near McColls on King Street, Birkenhead.

"Christopher Kelly of New Chester Rd, Rock Ferry was arrested on 23 rd March on suspicion of an offensive weapon after officers received reports that he had been seen in the store with the axe.

"He was detained and the axe was found hidden in a bush.

"He appeared at court on 25 th March where he was sentenced to six months in prison.

"Keep on telling us if you know where weapons are being hidden or if someone is carrying one – it is frightening and unnecessary and we’ll do all we can to take them off our streets."
