Man saves adorable baby squirrel and nurses him back to health after being attacked by crows

An east end barber has found a new buddy to spend time with during lockdown - but Augustus is not your typical four-legged friend.

Kyle Burgess, 33, named the baby squirrel after he saved the tiny creature from being killed by crows in his local park and is nursing him back to health in his Dennistoun flat.

In a story sure to make you go ‘aww’, Kyle was out walking with his wife when he spotted a baby squirrel being attacked by crows.

When he approached, the tiny creature coward behind their shoes for safety, before eventually climbing up Kyle's legs and into his arms.

Kyle's Facebook post reads: "I know what should have been done, leave it to either get eaten or be lucky and eventually get rescued by the mum, but with five crows and no interested mum, I couldn’t leave it.

"I judged the situation best I could and I'm pretty certain he was gonna die very soon after we intervened, had we not.

"So we currently have a baby squirrel sleeping in a cat box, with lots of towels for warmth, BUT we also have two cats (obviously locked in a separate room) so this is by no means a tale of us adopting a squirrel as lovely as that would be."

Kyle’s quick thinking has earned him plenty of praise from online animal lovers, and the post has 129 comments and counting.

The 33-year-old logged back in to share an update after Augustus' first night in the flat - and it’s good news for the wee guy,  who has built up his strength and has a healthy appetite.

Kyle added that while he has "absolutely loved cuddling into him" the set up won't be permanent as he has arrange for Augustus to be rehomed at a wildlife rehab.

"He'll be hand reared and built up in the warmth inside and when strong enough, tried to be released into the wild," Kyle wrote.

"However if he shows signs this won't be successful, he will live in the setup there with other squirrels and animals unable to be released.

"So at the worst, a pampered semi-domestic but outdoor life and best, a wee hotel stay then running free."

Kyle promises to keep followers updated with any more pictures - in the meantime, well done to Kyle and his wife for saving one of the cutest creatures we’ve seen in a while.
