Man saved in six-hour Christmas Day rescue in Lake District after botched wild camping

Lake District rescuers had to be called out Christmas morning after a young man went camping and awoke unable to walk.

The man had been attempting to find the Priest's Hole in Glenridding, Cumbria, and had set up camp on Christmas Eve.

The mountain rescue volunteers said after taking shelter under a large boulder, he was unable to move his feet when he woke up the next morning, reports LancsLive.

Fifteen members of the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, a voluntary service, were called out and spent six hours stretchering the man down to safety.

Although the team run the service 365 days a year, they noted there are occasions they would rather be at home spending time with their families or loved ones.

A spokesperson for the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team said: "When we should have been opening presents with kids we were called out at 8:45am for a young man who had unsuccessfully tried to find the Priest Hole for a Christmas Eve wild camp.

"Having taken shelter beneath a large boulder for the night he awoke this morning with cold feet and unable to walk.

"Fifteen team members took 6 hours to stretcher the man down to the valley bottom.

"Although the team are usually happy to go out, whatever the time, day or night and whatever the weather - after such an awful year, there are occasions when we would far rather be at home spending time with our families and loved ones."
