Man's plea to save high street bank in Leeds after closure confirmed

A man from Morley has launched a campaign to try and save his local Yorkshire Bank branch from closure.

Owners Virgin Money announced it would be closing 22 bank branches across the country, including the one in Queen Street, Morley, and merging another 30 as part of a major restructure.

It has announced the controversial move, which will result in the loss of 500 jobs, after a merger with Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank in 2018.

But Sammy Jeffreys, who is autistic, says he "would be lost" without his local branch and claims the closure could have a big impact on elderly and disabled people in Morley.

The 26-year-old has launched a petition calling for the bank to remain open.

'I would be lost'

The petition states: " If Yorkshire Bank closes I wont know what to do with my finances anymore. I would be lost.

"If you have a second sign this petition to keep it open for all the residents of Morley to enjoy.

"It's easy to get to and access for disabled people and the elderly, but if they close those people will have to travel further to access their bank.

"Some people might be nervous about that or, with existing conditions, might not be able to make it that far at all.

"I care because I am one of those people. So help me stop this un-needed closure."

Virgin Money says the number of customers who use branches has fallen significantly in recent years and the closures will ensure that it has a network which is "fit for the future".

'The decision to close branches is never taken lightly'

Lucy Dimes, group business transformation officer, said: "The decision to close branches is never taken lightly.

"The changes are focused on consolidating branches where there is another Clydesdale Bank/Yorkshire Bank/Virgin Money location within half a mile, as well as closing a number of branches to reflect changes to customer demand."

The bank has also announced it will be closing the Yorkshire Bank branch in Harehills Lane, Harehills.
