Man's plea to reunite retired Edinburgh firefighter with helmet he bought at car boot sale years ago

Many people have old trinkets and memorabilia lying around their attic that they once picked up at a jumble sale - but you rarely know where it came from.

For one Edinburgh man, it was imperative to reunite a retired firefighter with his helmet - which he had found while hunting through a car boot sale "years ago".

Taking to social media to ask for social media's help in finding the rightful owner, Mark Martin said: "When I was a kid, all I wanted to be was a fireman and this was picked up for me many years ago at a car boot sale.

"It’s been in the loft and I think it’s now time to reunite it with the owner/family."

"Does anyone know Firefighter McAnna from Lothian and Borders?", he asked.

In an incredible turn of events, Mark managed to track down the firefighter within hours thanks to those who responded to his plea.

It is thought that the helmet belonged to Arthur McAnna, who served as the OIC at Sighthill Blue Watch before he retired.

Thanking those who had got in touch, Mark said he was left "astounded" by how quickly he was able to find a name, number and address of the original officer.

He said: "I’m hoping to reunite the helmet with the owner soon. Thank you everyone who’s helped. You’re amazing."
