Man's 'life-changing' paper towel hack stops you from crying when chopping onions

Onions are a staple ingredient for a number of home-cooked dishes.

Whether you're whipping up a spaghetti bolognese or are planning to roast some vegetables, onions will most likely be involved.

But although we love the flavour and depth it adds to a meal, within seconds of chopping them we're left with tears streaming down our face.

Now a man has shared a simple hack to stop the age-old problem.

Max McCann has racked up more than 830,000 followers on TikTok for sharing simple easy-to-follow recipes and in this case "life-changing" tips.

You just need a paper towel (tiktok)

In a video that has been viewed almost 667,000 times, Max, known as @mealswithmax, explained that all you need to stop an onion from making you cry is a wet paper towel.

He said: "Here's a tip you might not know about when chopping onions.

"If you get a damp cloth like this and put it on the chopping board, it will stop your eyes from crying when you're chopping them.

Did you know this? (tiktok)

"Apparently the acid in the onions is attracted to water which is usually in your tear ducts, putting a wet towel on the board makes it go to that instead."

Since being posted, the video has received almost 15,000 likes and 200 comments from impressed viewers.

One said: "I heard this yesterday!! Literally, life-changing."

Another wrote: "Wow thank you because it kills my eyes."

"Why did you not tell me this on Sunday?" said a third.

Whilst someone else put: "This 100 per cent works. Saw it on TikTok, did it, now won't stop."
