Man's eye gouged out, part of nose bitten off during fight in San Diego

SAN DIEGO _ A man accused of gouging out another man's eye and biting off a bit of his nose during a fight here was arrested Thursday night, San Diego police said.

The scuffle began when the assailant rammed a shopping cart into the victim, who was walking west on Market Street near Park Boulevard about 8:30 p.m., police said. The two men started yelling at each other.

The attacker then took out an umbrella and swung it at the stranger. When the victim took it away, the assailant started punching him. During the fight, the attacker bit off a chunk of the victim's nose and gouged out one of his eyes, police Officer Robert Heims said.

The victim, a 60-year-old man, was taken to a hospital. His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Police found the suspect, a 44-year-old man, a short distance away and arrested him. He was to be booked into jail on suspicion of assault and mayhem.
