Man's body recovered from lake near Co Antrim hotel

A man's body has been recovered from a lake near a Co Antrim hotel following an incident.

Police received a report shortly before 2.05 pm on Tuesday, October 26, relating to the concern for a man's safety in a lake in the Paradise Walk area of Templepatrick, close to the Hilton Hotel.

UUP councillor, Paul Michael, said the local community is in shock following the tragic incident.

He said: "A community in shock after news of Tragic incident in Templepatrick. Our sincere sympathy to the family of this gentleman who has so tragically lost his life."

Jim Montgomery, a UUP councillor for the Antrim area, told Belfast Live that the man involved was one of two diving for golf balls in aid of a charity.

"It's horrendous to even think about it, it's such a terrible accident," he added.

Pam Cameron, South Antrim DUP MLA, said: "This is tragic news coming from Templepatrick this evening.

"My thoughts are of course with the family and friends of the individual who has lost their life. I’m very thankful for the efforts of the emergency services who as ever, have been quick to respond."

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Police received a report today (Tuesday 26th October) shortly before 2.05pm, for the concern for safety of a man in a lake in the Paradise Walk area of Templepatrick.

"Police and other emergency services responded. Sadly, a man's body was later recovered from the water.

"The local council have been made aware."

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also attended the scene after they received a 999 call at 2.17 pm.

A spokesperson said: "NIAS dispatched an Emergency crew, HART crew and ambulance officer to the scene.

"The Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS crew on board was also tasked to the incident.

"No-one was taken from the scene."

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed that two fire appliances and the specialist rescue team were in attendance at the incident in Templepatrick.

Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council stated that they're currently investigating the incident.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Council added: "As this is a live investigation, no further comment can be made at this time.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this gentleman’s family at this very sad time."

A spokesperson for Hilton Belfast Templepatrick Golf & Country Club said: "We were very saddened to learn of the fatality in our grounds and we assisted the emergency services, when needed, yesterday.

"Our thoughts are with the bereaved family at this difficult time."
