A man has died and a woman has been taken to hospital in Northern Ireland after emergency services rushed to reports of two people in a river
Police were called to the Lagan Weir area of Belfast city centre in the early hours of Friday morning.
They had received reports that there was a man and a woman in the River Lagan at around 2.20am.
Officers were joined at the scene by other emergency services and the woman was recovered from the water and taken to hospital.
A man's body was later recovered from the water. Police have said the death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.
A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police attended a report of a man and woman in the water at around 2.20am this morning, Friday 5th May, in the Lagan Weir area of Belfast.
"Police and other emergency services responded and the woman was recovered from the water and taken to hospital.
"A man's body was later recovered from the water.
"The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time."
People have taken to social media to express their sorrow following the tragedy, reported BelfastLive.
One person wrote on Facebook: “Aww so sad. God love them. Hope the lady will be alright and condolences to the family of the gentleman."
Another said: "This is awful news prayers being said," and other comments included "terrible news" and "absolutely heartbreaking".
