Man's body pulled from the River Tyne after emergency services search

A man's body has been recovered from the River Tyne following a search on Wednesday.

Emergency services including fire and rescue carried out a search operation along the Quayside shortly before 10am after reports were made to police.

The body of a man was then pulled from the water and formal identification is now taking place.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "At about 9.45am this morning police received a report of a body in the River Tyne at Newcastle Quayside.

"Emergency services have attended and the body of a man has been recovered.

"Enquiries to establish the identity of the body and inform his next of kin will now take place."

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service added: "We were called out to support Northumbria Police at an incident near the High Level Bridge, Newcastle.

"Crews from Newcastle Central, Byker – including our Swiftwater Rescue team – and Gateshead Community Fire Stations were on scene from 9.48 until 10.23."
