Man's body pulled from River Mersey at Liverpool Pier Head

An investigation is underway after a man's body was found in the River Mersey this morning.

Emergency services descended on Liverpool's Pier Head just after 9.30am after a man was found in the water.

Witnesses saw police, ambulance and trained scuba divers join the rescue effort and the man was pulled from the water and onto a docked vessel but sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Today police said the death was being treated as "unexplained" and a post mortem examination was being organised to establish the cause of death.

His identity is not yet known.

"Officers were called to the Pier Head at around 9.35am following reports a body had been recovered from the water."

He added: "Emergency services attended and he was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time the death is being treated as unexplained and a post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death."

Police said enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and inform next of kin.
