Man's body found off Sunshine Coast

Police have found the body of a 20-year-old man who went missing on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. (AAP)

The body of a 20-year-old man who went missing while swimming off the Sunshine Coast has been found.

Rescue crews had resumed their search for the man identified in media reports as Travis Davis of Capalaba, south of Brisbane, after he was swept away at Shelly Beach near Caloundra on Saturday afternoon.

Queensland Police issued a statement at 2.30pm AEDT on Sunday confirming the body of a 20-year-old Capalaba man had been found in waters off Shelly Beach.

"Water police on jetskis found the body in waters south of where he went missing," the statement said.

A Facebook post by Shane Davis - identified in media reports as Travis' father - said on Sunday: "They found him going to identify him at long last he can come home but he has passed".

The Davis family had been among hundreds of people who had lined Caloundra's coastline on Sunday as rescue crews resumed their search for his body.

An extensive sea and air search was launched after Mr Davis went missing while swimming with another 20-year-old on Saturday afternoon.

Police said both men had shown signs of distress in the surf and received help from three members of the public, who were only able to rescue the other 20-year-old.

He was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for treatment.

Lifesavers searched for Mr Davis before water police and divers took over on Saturday, looking until 9pm AEST before resuming at first light on Sunday.

Kerrod Davis said his brother had gone for a swim on the unpatrolled beach while visiting family in Caloundra.

"We didn't get any sleep last night," he told News Corp.

"It was so hard for us to just be in the house while Travis was still out there."
