Man's body found in woodland near canal

The body of a man was discovered in woodland this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Litherland after reports a man's body had been found on Saturday afternoon.

The man, believed to have been in his 60s, was found on land off Bleasedale Way just before 12.25pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragic discovery led to a police presence in the surrounding area, including around the Leeds Liverpool Canal near Gorsey Lane, where sniffer dogs were deployed.

Merseyside Police said the incident is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

Work is underway to formally identify the man and inform his next of kin.

While the man has not been formally identified police do not believe it is that of a 49-year-old man from Litherland whose disappearance has recently prompted appeals for details of his whereabouts.

Anyone with information that could help the force's enquiries can contact officers via Twitter (@MerPolCC), Facebook (Merseyside Police Contact Centre) or by calling 101 with the reference number 398 of March 27.
