Man's body found in River Mersey this morning

A man's body was found washed up in the River Mersey this morning.

The discovery was made at about 7.30am following reports it had been on a small sandy and stony beach area, close to Cressington Esplanade.

Firefighters, ambulance and police were called to the scene in south Liverpool.

Witnesses said they could see emergency services making their way to the body, near to the river wall, and wrapping it up.

It was then transported to the promenade level using extendable ladders.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatality is currently being treated as unexplained.

The identity of the man remains unknown and work is ongoing to establish who he is.

His next of kin are due to be informed.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service sent two engines to the scene, along with their search and rescue vehicle.

A spokeswoman said crews helped paramedics access the particular lower-level part of the waterfront.

Firefighters, who first arrived at 7.48, left 50 minutes later at 8.38am.
