Police probe after man's body found in Mersey

The coroner's office has appealed for the family of a man whose body was found in the River Mersey to come forward as an investigation into his death begins.

Members of the public contacted emergency services at around 7.30am on Friday, February 21, following sightings of a body on a small sandy and stony beach area, close to Cressington Esplanade, Cressington.

Today the Coroner's office issued an appeal for the next of kin of Jonathan Colin Wilkins, 52, to come forward.

Merseyside Police said there were no suspicious circumstances around the death of Mr Wilkins, of Boswell Street in Toxteth.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Liverpool and Wirral Coroner's investigation officer Simon Knuckey on 0151 233 0134 or email simon.knuckey@liverpool.gov.uk.

At the time witnesses said they could see emergency services making their way to the body, near to the river wall, and wrapping it up.

It was then transported to the promenade level using extendable ladders.

Mr Wilkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service sent two engines to the scene, along with their search and rescue vehicle.

A spokeswoman said crews helped paramedics access the particular lower-level part of the waterfront.

Firefighters, who first arrived at 7.48, left 50 minutes later at 8.38am.
