Man's body found in river at Trebanos after he entered water and was washed away during Storm Dennis

A man's body has been discovered after he entered a river and was washed away during Storm Dennis.

The man, who is in his 60s was seen entering the River Tawe near Gorsedd Park in the Ystradgynlais area at around 10am on Sunday.

His body was later discovered near Trebanos Rugby Club, according to Dyfed-Powys Police.

Despite the efforts of paramedics the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A police spokesman said: "His next of kin and HM Coroner have been informed.

"His death is not being treated as suspicious or linked to the adverse weather.

"Our thanks go out to all who assisted in the response to this tragic incident in very difficult weather conditions."

Clydach councillor Paulette Smith said: "It is a tragedy when anyone dies in circumstances like these. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

"I am so proud of our emergency rescue services who must have been at full stretch this weekend," she said.

Councillor Gordon Walker added: "It is a very sad event. I first heard this morning about this.

"My thoughts go out to the man's family and friends."

The tragic news came after flooding caused by heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers caused by Storm Dennis was declared  a "major incident" by police. The Met Office had earlier upgraded a weather warning to Wales to red status, indicating danger to life.

Many towns and villages across south Wales have suffered severe flooding, with a large number of people having to be evacuated from their homes.

Some communities across south Wales have been cut off and emergency service workers are working to evacuate homes and rescue people who have been stranded.
