Man arrested after Canberra alleyway death

Police in the ACT have arrested a man following the death of another man in central Canberra. (AAP)

One man is in custody following the death of another in an alleyway in central Canberra.

Police were called to the scene following reports of a man collapsing near a cafe in Garema Place in Civic, about 9.45am on Saturday.

Despite first-aid efforts from members of the public, attending officers and paramedics, the 29-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives believe an altercation occurred near the area where he was found.

One person has been arrested in relation to the incident however no charges have been laid.

Investigators are collecting CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses in an effort to confirm the exact circumstances.

Anyone who saw the incident and has not already spoken to police is urged to come forward.

Local media outlets earlier reported the man may have been the victim of a stabbing.
