The body of a 53-year-old man has been found in a river in Bellshill.

The grim discovery was made at the River Calder in the Lanarkshire town at 10.15am yesterday.

His family have been made aware.

Police could not rule out suspicious activity and continue to treat the death as unexplained.

A spokes person for Police Scotland said: "Police Scotland can confirm that the body of a 53-year-old man was found in the River Calder in Belshill around 10.15am on Monday, 30 March.

"His next of kin are aware.

"His death is being treated as unexplained, pending the outcome of a post mortem examination.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
