Man rushed to hospital following five-car smash in Heywood

A man was rushed to hospital following a five-car smash in Heywood.

The man, understood to be in his 40s, was hit on Rochdale Road East, at the junction with Barley Hall Street.

He suffered back and neck injuries.

A police spokeswoman said the man was conscious and breathing when officers arrived at 9.40am on Tuesday.

Five cars were involved in the collision, including a bronze Toyota Verso, a blue Mondeo, a white Mini, a grey Ford Focus and a white BMW.

An electricity pylon was hit by one of the vehicles. Electricity North West engingeers were called to the scene.

Rochdale Road East was closed in both directions while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: "We were called to a road traffic collision on Rochdale Road East.

"We got the call at 9.40am today. We sent one ambulance and we have taken a patient to hospital."

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 9.40am to reports a man had been hit by a car. Five cars have also collided.

"The man is conscious and breathing. He has been taken to hospital with back and neck injuries."
