One man was subsequently taken to hospital. The extent of his injuries are currently unknown.

Two lanes of the motorway remain closed, although traffic is getting by via the hard shoulder. Traffic Scotland have warned drivers using the motorway to expect delays.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Around 6:10pm on Wednesday 17th of March police received a report of a road crash involving two vehicles on the M8 near Shotts. One man has been taken to hospital.

"Officers remain on the scene and enquiries are ongoing."
