Man rushed to hospital after 'road rage acid attack' in south London

Police officer numbers in London could plummet to the lowest level since 2002 unless funding is urgently increased, Sadiq Khan has said (Picture: PA Wire/PA Images)

A man has been rushed to hospital for treatment after a suspected acid attack in south London.

The man, in his 30s, was struck with a liquid after a road rage incident on Croxted Road, Lambeth, according to witnesses.

Officers said they are working to confirm what the liquid was.

Writing on Twitter, Paula Smithard said: “Apparently the incident began with road rage before Croxted Road, driver got something corrosive squirted in his face, perhaps not acid, but police initially treated it as an acid attack”.

Another witness added: “There was four fire engines and police on [the] scene straight away.”

Police and the London Fire Brigade raced to the scene during rush hour, at about 6.20pm, following reports of a man having a “substance thrown in his face”.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: “A man, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital complaining of pain to his eyes. His injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing.

“Work continues to determine what the substance was.

“There have been no arrests. Enquiries continue.”
