Man dies after falling from M53 motorway bridge

A man has died after falling from a motorway bridge this morning, Merseyside Police confirmed.

Police said they were first called just after 9am over "concerns for the safety of a man on a bridge".

Police have since confirmed the man's death and say his family have been informed.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm emergency services attended an incident on the M53 this morning, Monday 19 April.

"At around 9.10am, officers were called to the scene after reports a man had fallen from a bridge at Junction 3.

"The man sadly died at the scene."

Police have ruled out foul play.

The spokesperson added: "His next of kin have been informed and his death is not being treated as suspicious. Junction 3 and Junction 4 of the M53 have now reopened."

North West Ambulance Service confirmed an ambulance was sent to the scene but records suggest the man was not taken to hospital.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
