Man rushed to hospital after being battered with weapon by gang in broad daylight

A man has been rushed to hospital with head and facial injuries after being set upon by a gang of weapon-wielding thugs in Greenock.

The victim, a 30-year-old man, was attacked by two or three other men in Finnieston Street in Greenock, Inverclyde in broad daylight.

The attackers pounced at around lunchtime on Saturday and battered the victim with 'some sort of weapon'.

He suffered head and facial injuries and was rushed to the town's Inverclyde Royal Hospital for treatment.

His current condition is yet to be confirmed.

Police confirmed that an investigation was underway to trace the callous attackers.

Anyone with information or those who witnessed the assault are being asked to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told the Greenock Telegraph: "A 30-year-old male was assaulted with some sort of weapon.

"He sustained injuries to his head and face and was admitted to Inverclyde Royal Hospital and remains there.

"It is believed he was attacked by two or three males.

"Inquiries are ongoing and any persons with information should contact CID on 101."
