Man rushed to hospital after being attacked outside nightclub on Christmas night out

A man was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after being attacked outside a night club on a Christmas night out.

Emergency services were called to Victoria Street in the city centre shortly before 3am on Sunday morning to reports of an attack .

When officers arrived at the scene, outside Heaven nightclub, the 38-year-old victim was found with significant injuries to his head before being rushed to the Royal, and later to Walton Neurological Hospital, for treatment.

It is believed that the victim was involved in an argument with another man in the street, while on a night out with friends, before being attacked .

A 29-year-old man, from Egremont in Wirral , was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and is currently being questioned by police.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward in order to help with their investigation.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Detectives are appealing for information following a serious assault on a 38-year-old man in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of this morning (Sunday, 8 December 2019).

"A 29-year-old man from Egremont, Wirral, has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives.

"Officers were called to Victoria Street to reports of an assault of a man outside Heaven, when they arrived they found the victim who had suffered a serious head injury as a result of the assault.

"He was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and then transferred to Walton Neurological Hospital for treatment for his head injury.

"It is believed that the victim was on a night out with friends when the attack took place and was assaulted following an argument on the street.

"Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and are speaking to businesses in the area in a bid to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident."

Detective Inspector Amy Smith, said: “Our investigation into this incident continues and we remain very keen to speak to anyone with any information that could assist our enquiries.

“The investigation is in its early stages and at this time detectives are trying to ascertain the motive for the attack.

"Liverpool city centre was exceptionally busy on Saturday night in the run up to Christmas, and I would urge anyone who was in the Victoria street area at about 2.45am who may have seen the incident, or who has any phone footage or information, which could help us with our inquiries to get in touch."
