Man 'running round naked' and 'suspicious package' lead to Manchester Airport security alert

The bomb squad were called to Manchester Airport today after a security alert was sparked by a naked man running around the coach station.

An eyewitness has described the moment she saw the suspect running around the airport's coach station before police were called.

The airport's travel interchange and surrounding buildings have since been evacuated following reports of a suspicious package .

A controlled explosion took place as a result.

Caroline Watson, a coach driver, said she saw a man running around naked before police were called to the scene, reports the MEN .

She said: "The guy was running around with his arms waving in the air, going up and down.

"He was running back and forth. He was going in and out of the terminus. He had no clothing on whatsover. It is not what you expect to see at 6.10am on a Monday morning.”

Caroline said Voyager House, an office building near to the coach station, was also being evacuated.

he added: "It is like a mass exodus. All hell has broken loose."

A cordon has been placed around the Manchester Airport transport interchange and travellers have been evacuated from inside the building.

Trams, trains and buses are currently suspended while police attend the incident.

Around 100 passengers who were waiting for transport home have been ushered into the airport terminal

Greater Manchester Police confirmed a man had been detained at the scene.

A statement said: "Officers are currently responding to reports of a suspicious package at Manchester Airport transport interchange.

"Further enquiries are being carried out and bomb disposal officers are on their way to assist with these enquiries.

"A man has been detained by police at the scene.

"A cordon is in place at Manchester Airport transport interchange and people are encouraged to follow directions from officers."

A later statement said: "Bomb disposal officers are at Manchester Airport transport interchange to assist GMP with enquiries.


"As part of their assessment to ensure the package is safe, a controlled explosion took place.

"The cordon will remain in place as a precautionary measure as enquiries continue."
