Man rows down flooded UK street in orange kayak as bemused residents look on

Parts of London became submerged in water after more than double July's average monthly rainfall fell in the space of a few hours on Sunday.

The flash floods saw cars stranded in rising water, Tube stations had to be shut, while residents were caught short in waist-high waters affected area in the city.

A multitude of roads were left under water, from Sutton and Camberwell to Barking and Walthamstow.

In Walthamstow one resident was captured using an interesting mode of travel on a flooded street.

The determined man was rowing along the submerged east London road in a bright orange kayak.

Dressed in a hooded black jacket he can be seen passing three residents on the street who are gripping on to their umbrellas as the rain continues to fall.

Twitter user Ruby Tuesday uploaded the image with the caption: "As if my mums roads flooded in Walthamstow and some geezers gone kayaking."

She followed up the tweet by identifying the man in the kayak, saying: "The guy in the boat is @RosssiiH by the way making the most out of life clearly."

Her tweet attracted replies from other Londoners who had also spotted people rowing their way through flooded streets.

One man joked: "You can float in 3 inches of water in a kayak. In the country we call that a puddle."

Another said: "Gotta get down the pub somehow."

"Guys making lemonade out of the lemons life gave him," a third tweeted.

Another person commented: "When life hands you lemons…"

While some questioned whether it was safe to row in the flood waters.

One woman tweeted: In a playboat... In sewage-contaminated water. I hope he's not got to try anything that ends in a roll!"

Another said: "Yuck, do they know flood water often has sewage in it?!"

The flooding also sparked major incidents at Newham and Whipps Cross hospitals after parts of the sites became flooded.

Patients were told to avoid the emergency departments of both hospitals where possible and ambulances were being redirected, while extra staff were drafted in.

It's the second time in a month that the capital's streets have been underwater, with the fire service receiving more than 1,000 calls about flooding on July 13.

The Met Office has issued further warnings over rain and thunderstorms in England and Scotland over the next four days, with yellow warnings in place.
