Man robbed 85-year-old on his doorstep in south Bristol

A man who pestered a Hartcliffe pensioner for money robbed him on his doorstep.

Gary White was known for being a nuisance in Newland Road, Bristol Crown Court heard.

After managing to get a £5 'loan' from 85-year-old Clarence Jackson, White returned to his home, pushed him to the floor and stole his wallet.

White, 41, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to robbery which occurred on October 18.

Judge Michael Longman jailed him for 20 months.

He told White: "For some while you have made a nuisance of yourself against the residents of Newland Road.

"In particular you've made a nuisance of yourself with the victim of this robbery, Mr Jackson, asking him for money.

"You visited his home on a number of occasions, then took a step up in terms of your behaviour because you robbed Mr Jackson in his home, albeit at his threshold.

"You decided you were going to help yourself."

Julian Howells, prosecuting, said Mr Jackson loaned White £5 but the next day White returned to his home and asked for more money, which was declined.

When White was asked to leave he pushed the pensioner to the floor, reached into his trouser pocket and stole his wallet, containing £10 and bank cards.

White then fled the scene and police were called, the court heard.

Police arrested him a week later and made no comment in interview.

Matthew Comer, defending, conceded the victim of the robbery was vulnerable.

But he told the court: "The facts don't suggest a great deal of force was exerted.

"It looks like his intention was to pester for money.

"The robbery arose out of pushing him to the floor and was opportunistic."
