Man rescued from the River Aire in Leeds and admitted to hospital

A man was pulled to safety from the River Aire and has been admitted to hospital this evening (Thursday).

The emergency services were called to part of the river, near Neville Street in Leeds city centre, to reports someone was in the water.

Members of the public tried to help the man in his 60s but it was actually the fire service who pulled the man to safety, according to West Yorkshire Police.

A police spokesman said: "We were alerted to a person in the water at around 5.45pm.

"Members of the public tried to assist but could not locate him.

"The man was pulled to safety and taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

"It is believed the fire service pulled the man to safety from the water."
