He was checked over by paramedics at the scene, with firefighters spending about half-an-hour responding at the scene.

Five fire engines attended, as well as a water incident unit and a line rescue unit.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At around 8.20pm firefighters were informed of a man being in the River Mersey off Wharf Street in Warrington.

"A raft was used to get to the man.

"Firefighters then got him out of the water and took him back to dry land at the side of the river.

"The man was assessed by paramedics before being handed over to the care of paramedics.

"Firefighters were in attendance for less than half-an-hour."
