Man rescued from Horfield flat fire and taken to hospital

A man has been taken to hospital after a flat fire in Horfield.

Firefighters were called to the fire on Toronto Road yesterday morning (Monday, January 10) at 8.53am.

Avon and Fire Rescue Service said the man was rescued from the building by firefighters, adding that he was then treated by paramedics on the scene before being taken to hospital.

The cause of the fire in Horfield is currently unknown, the fire service said.

The full statement from the fire service read: "Crews from Patchway, Temple and Kingswood were called to reports of a flat fire.

"On arrival crews found smoke issuing from the building. Firefighters rescued one male from the building on arrival, he was treated by paramedics on the scene and conveyed to hospital.

"Firefighters used two high pressure hose reels, one 45mm safety jet and four thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the blaze. Four firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety.

"Following the fire, positive pressure ventilation fans were used to clear smoke from the building.

"The cause of the fire is currently unknown."

The fire service did not state if the man was injured.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, said “We received a 999 call at 09:09 on Monday 10 January regarding a fire within the Horfield area of Bristol.

"We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and conveyed a patient to Southmead Hospital.”

On other news, a lorry transporting hay bales caught fire on the M4 last night.

Firefighters shared an image of the blaze on the motorway via Twitter this morning (Tuesday, January 11) after crews left.

The image shows the vehicle on fire as large plumes of smoke rise from it, with several firefighters also visible.
