A man was rescued from Dalbeattie burn on Tuesday afternoon.
School pupils on their lunch break raised the alarm after spotting the man in the water near the bridge beside the post office.
Police officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel rushed to the scene and pulled the man from the freezing water.
He was treated for hypothermia and shrubs and bushes had to be cut from the riverbank so a stretcher could be lifted over a wall.
He was then taken by ambulance to Dumfries Infirmary.
A police spokesman said: ““We were made aware of concern for a man in the Dalbeattie area around 12pm on Tuesday.
“The man was subsequently traced in water near the town’s High Street.
“He was recovered from the water and passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.”
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: “We were alerted to reports of a person in difficulty on a river bank at Maxwell Street, Dalbeattie.
“Firefighters assisted the casualty who was handed into the care of paramedics.”
